Phantasmagoria

string quartet in 5 movements – 13’

The opening Pastoral moves through an evocative violin 1 solo to a romantically expressive viola solo with tutti imitative passages filled with neo-Baroque ornamentations. In Illumination, the second movement, the instruments use the wood of their bows on the strings in contrast with a slow-moving melody of sustained notes rising out of this sylvan texture. The next three movements are played attacca: Phosphoresce’s phrases breathe and float as they gently ascend in register. The Grand Dance erupts in motion and dance driving forward to Jubilare’s virtuosic celebration of speed and fluidity with brief turning pauses before jumping back in for the final dash to the end.
